War (What is it good for?)

I want to start off by saying that I thank God for all the men and women who have made the choice to live and die for their country.  Where would we be today without these brave people?  Well, if my grandfather and others like him had not fought during World War II, we might be walking around with little Hitler mustaches on.  We might all have been speaking German.

But, my grandfather did fight.  Many other people fought that war and so many others in our nation’s past.  War is not pretty.  War is ugly and painful.  However, there comes a time when a nation must defend itself to protect its people and heritage.  Our country is in the middle of one of the most gruesome wars in its short history.  We are fighting against an ideal, an army of religious zealouts, people willing to die for what they believe.  This belief goes deeper than a thought or whim, it is a conviction.  We used to have convictions in this country.  We used to believe in something and were willing to die for it.  What happened to this nation?  Why are we so afraid to make it known to the world that we are not a bunch of pansies who will sit back as we are picked off by a bunch of terroistic bullies?  We seem to be so worried about what the rest of the world is going to think about us.  The politicians seem so worried about polls and popularity.  Come on guys, let the soldiers do what they are trained to do.  Let them break stuff and let them kill the enemy.

I have a lot of faith in our armed forces.  I don’t believe there is an army of humans anywhere in the world that could take our “guys” (women included).  Lets let them do their job.  Lets take care of their families while they are away.  Lets let them know we are behind them and stop whining about the setbacks when there have been so many victories.

What good is war?  Well, war sucks!  Men and women answering the call to give their lives for their country in service and protection, now that is awesome.  No one likes war.  No one really wins in war, but there can always be a loser.  I don’t want our country to live in fear of terrorism.  We can’t make it stop.  There will always be people who hate and want to kill.  But we can chase them aroud the world and make it harder for them to do their deeds.  We can put the fear of God in their hearts and teach them that they may kill and they may hurt, but they also CAN die.

I often wonder how the world today would treat the old soldiers and generals of our past.  Men like Patton wouldn’t have made it these days.  If we sent them out for war, lets let them do it and get them back home as soon as possible, but not before they are done.
