Teachers with guns? Lawmaker proposes - Crime & Punishment - MSNBC.com
I know this one is going to cause some controversy. I know there are not going to be a lot of people on the bandwagon for guns in our schools, but I am not saying that I think teachers should carry guns. I don’t think anyone needs to be carrying a firearm that is not well trained to use one. However, I would like to say that I think ALL schools should have someone, and even multiple people, carrying firearms, or at the least, some device that can incapacitate an attacker.
When I was in 6th grade at a school in North Carolina, we had 10ft high fences with razor sharp barbed-wire rolls across the top. This enclosed the entire school and athletic areas. We had a security system where people had to come through the front door past the office and an armed security guard after pushing a button and being visually inspected first before being granted access to the building. Our security guards roamed the halls, especially during class changing times. There were at least two or three. The school campus was huge.
I think our schools need more security in this fasion. Locked doors do not a prison make. We need more eyes watching out for our kids and more deterrent than walking past a principal’s office on the way in. By the way, most of my principals and school staff were never fit enough to take on an assailant. We need trained security people to make sure our kids safety is secure.
And while I am on this rant I will share my feelings about carrying guns legally. My state allows me to carry a gun legally if concealed on or about my person or in my car. However, my company does not allow me to carry my weapon to work. Therefore, since it cannot be on company grounds, or in my office, or on my person, I cannot carry at all. So, what does a person due in this situation that wants to carry for self-defense. I am not saying that I have the answer, but I would like the question to be thought about. Should citizens be allowed to carry concealed regardless of their jobs? Should employers be allowed to keep us from carrying? Would it not be safer if law-abiding legal gun-carrying citizens were allowed to enter school grounds while carrying (within legal restrictions)? Would it be safer for our kids if teachers were allowed to “pack” or would it bring more problems to our schools.
In closing, I would have to say that I have a lot of respect for teachers these days. Students can get away with a lot more than teachers and teachers are left without any recourse for action. We need to make schools safer for our kids and their teachers an faculty. I am at least glad someone is trying to think of ways we can do that. Maybe this will stir some good thinking. What are your opinions?
