What’s Up With That
One thing that urks me about novice computer users is the fact that they don’t know the basic computer skill necessary to get and maintain a job in today’s technological society. Like it or not, the world is an evolving place. You have to evolve with it, technically speaking, to maintain your place in its system. There are certain skills and actions that must be learned and taken to remain up-to-date. First off, one of my main beefs is with people who do not take time to learn the basic skills of interoperating with their machine/s. I find it odd that a lot of users learn how to change wallpaper and screensavers before they learn how to change their passwords. I also find it odd that many people spend hours playing card games that do not require an expensive personal computer, but a simple deck of cards which could be purchased at any department store for a buck or two. Changing the time, changing your passwords, locating heavily accessed files and folders, opening email, setting up email, and sending email: These are basic actions that must be learned before you try to “tweak” your system. Please learn the basics first. Second, in this day in time when everything is going digital, you would expect people to check their email every once and a while. Not so, my friend. A lot of users simply check once a month or week. Do you check your mailbox that often? No, you look in that sweet box of daily bill offerings and spam every day on your way in the house. Email should be checked at least once a day. I am lucky in that I have a Blackberry issued from work and get every email as it is delivered. Third, when you have a problem on a Windows machine, you should reboot befpre calling me for help. Most problems on Windows, it seems, are cured by a simple reboot. If I were running Linux I might actually try to take time to cure the system of whatever sickness it had without a reboot, but on Windows, it is best just to reboot.

Amen. I can\’t stand the majority of these type of people that I work with on a daily basis. It does make it that much better when someone is competent though.
