Shut Up and Sing

Filming some tough Chicks - The Boston Globe

You know, these girls are talented.  They really are.  They can play instruments and sing wonderfully.  While I may not agree with all of their material, I do have to admit that they do a great job when it comes to entertainment.  As a matter of fact, many people would have agreed with me up until the past few years.  You see, that is when they forgot what made them famous.  They now seem to believe that when all of their screaming fans promoted them to the top, that what the fans loved was their opinionated hot air.

Natalie Maines and her cohorts have openly shown us through their actions and their music that they don’t care what made them famous.  They only seem to brush the fans’ concerns aside as they boldly proclaim their message.  Their fans have been betrayed.  They try to act like it doesn’t matter, but we all know that CD sales are down and their concerts are not doing as well.  The fans have spoken, Natalie.

This has been an issue for me for a long time.  It does not stop or begin at the Dixie Chicks, though.  No, it is a long list of actors, actresses, singers, song-writers, etc.  The entertainment business is made out of people who’s lives are constructed on the egos given to them by adoring fans and co-entertainers.  A lot of entertainers seem to get to a point where they feel untouchable.  They think that they are invincible and that they are somehow smarter and better than all of the commoners who put them where they are by buying their movies and music.  No one is that good.  No one is invincible.  Entertainers would do well to remember the little people who make their lives such a success.

Entertainers make it big because we, as their fans, make them big.  It is our time, money, and attention that fill their coffers to overflowing.  If we did not care, then they would have no audience, no fans, no fanfare.  But we do care.  We do love to hear their music and watch their acting.  So many entertainers deserve the reverence they receive.  However, many do not.  Many forget that they were promoted because of a talent they have and not because of their political beliefs.  I do not care what you think about politics.  If I did, I would have written you in on my ballot for President.  I do have to admit that I can understand why they would use their office to spread their philosophy.  How many people are given the opportunity to reach millions in a lifetime?  But, is it really the thing to do.  I cannot say that I would not take the same chance, but I would not be stupid enough to think that what I say as an entertainer could affect my fan base’s view of me and love for me.  Dixie Chicks, you made your bed, now lie in it.  Shut up and sing.  The government is not silencing you.  The government is not telling you what to say, your fans are.  By the way, I am not one of them, but I do agree with them.  You are singers, sing!
