Not Ready to Make Nice and Evidently Not Ready to Shut Up

CNN story here

“The Dixie Chicks may have been “Not Ready to Make Nice,” but the Recording Academy was nice to the country-pop trio, giving them nominations in the top three categories for the 49th annual Grammy Awards.

The Chicks were nominated for album of the year for their CD “Taking the Long Way,” as well as record of the year and song of the year (a songwriter’s award) for their single “Not Ready to Make Nice.”

The group suffered a boycott from some country music radio stations in the aftermath of lead singer Natalie Maines’ 2003 comments about President George W. Bush.”

Yes, I watched the Grammy Awards show and yes I was sickened by the multiple awarding of the Dixie Chicks.  If you ask me, there isn’t much Chick in those Dixies.  Natalie is the most outspoken and least attractive of the bunch.  I just don’t understand why they have any following at all.  Of course, the Grammys are voted on by people in the recording industry.  These are not fan votes.  I think the “Chicks’” fans have voted by dropping in attendance to their concerts and shorting them on their “record” sales.

To be honest, I am just tired of celebrities putting down our country and leaders here and abroad.  Yes, I do believe in free speech, but I also believe there is a time and place for everything.  Yes, I do believe in freedom of speech, but I also believe in personal responsibility.  I just think that we get enough bad publicity as Americans and we don’t need to help fuel the fire.  We really are a great country.  I thank God that I live in a country where liberal women like these Dixie Chicks can stand and talk about their country’s leadership in a foreign country.  I just think that is is stupid for them to exercise that liberty.  Not every personal freedom is beneficial for our country or in it’s best interest.  We need to consider the consequences our actions can bring.

  1. Happy belated birthday! I turned 30 this year, so it was kind of a big one.

Interesting perspective. When is the time right to speak out against an unjustified war? The Dixie Chicks spoke up before the war started. Had more done so at that time, we may have been able to avoid the war in Iraq.

The majority of the country now believes the war in Iraq was a mistake. To me, that says the Dixie Chicks were right, but took heat for being right early. Now, saying the war in Iraq was a mistake will get you elected.
