Fangs, Claws, and Slober

No, I am not talking about the most recent Marylin Manson concert.  I am referring to my two new puppies.  My wife and I just got two new Labrador Retrievers.  They are AKC registered and we plan on breeding them in the future.  We have named them in honor of one of our favorite childhood television memories, The Dukes of Hazzard.  The girl is a chocolate lab and her name is Daisy May.  She is 7 weeks old currently.  The boy is a black lab and is a little older than Daisy May.  His name is Duke (of Earl) and he is 13 weeks old.  We were wanting to get a chocolate and a yellow to breed, but we read that this was not really responsible seeing how this sometimes causes the puppies to be born without proper coloring which goes against the unwritten dog breeding rules.  Therefore, we decided to get a black instead.

We used to have a little toy Rat Terrier, but she had to be put to sleep because she developed a very strange neurological problem.  She looked horrible and very uncomfortable her last day.  She is now buried behind our storage building.  This is why we decided to get the labs.  We knew the kids would miss having a dog in the yard.  Amy and I had both always wanted to get two purebred labs anyway, so, this was a good opportunity.  We couldn’t have found two better dogs for our family.

Daisy Duke

As you see, Daisy is a very lazy dog.  I do not know if it is because she is still so young, or if she is narcoleptic.  But what I do know is that is has been good for Duke.  Since she was so calm when we brought him home, it set a standard for him.  We are now in the process of crate training and potty training the couple.  They love each other so much.  Daisy and Duke lay all over each other all day and night.  They hop over one another and play bite.  They are good friends and it has been good for us since Daisy thinks she is a princess and did not like going outside by herself.  Now she has Duke to keep her company when they are out.  Both of them are listening well and not really giving us much trouble.  I have pretty much taught them to lay down and I am still working on getting them to sit on command.  Neither of them are big on treats yet and this makes it difficult to get them to work for me.

I will post more pictures as I have them and think you might like to see them.  I hope these guys will get big.  They have huge feet and their parents were big dogs.  There is a lot of chocolate and yellow in both of their lines and I hope this will make for some good litters (even though with labs it is a crap shoot when it comes to the coloring of puppies).
