Aging Geek

A thought hit me today as I was listening to a tech podcast on my iPod. I realize that I am interested in technology now, but what will happen as I age. Will that interest wane? I wonder what I will be most interested in in 10 years. I will be almost 40 in ten years. Will I be a geek at that time, will I be less interested, or will I have no desire to mess around with computers and the internet? I am sure that at some point my desire to fill my spare time with browsing the Internet, playing online games, and blogging will dwindle, but I wonder to what degree.

I wonder how many of my readers have dealt with this issue in the past. Some of my co-workers are the type that work in the technology industry as a job, but have no interest in computers when it comes to their spare time. I am one of those “nerdy” geeks that lives and breathes technology. I love to listen to technology podcasts and watch sci-fi movies. I will admit that I am an odd little bird. However, I do not go to Star Trek conventions or dress up for Star Wars premiers.

I just like to see technology make life easier. Over the last ten years technology has changed the way I do everything. I no longer use the US postal system. I no longer call my family on a real phone when I travel. I pay every bill online, which is also where I do my banking. Even at work my benefits are set up online. These advances have made my life much easier. I only wonder how long I will be willing to pur my life into using these advances. At some point, setting up VOIP will not be fun anymore, I guess. What are your opinions? Do I have any “older” readers who are still geeks at heart?
